Rickety Rocket
Description:
The cartoon Rickety Rocket is a 1979 animated television series about a "Far-Out Detective Agency" run by four African-American teenagers who solve mysteries across the solar system in their sentient, talking rocket ship. The show was produced by Ruby-Spears and aired as a segment of the anthology program The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show on ABC.
Set in a far-flung future of flying cars and asteroid cities, the series focuses on the Far-Out Detective Agency, whose members include: Cosmo: The determined leader of the group. Sunstroke: The intelligent (if sometimes goofy) member. Splashdown: The goofy and overweight character. Venus: The sole female member with a shrill voice. Rickety Rocket: The team's unique, makeshift space car built from junk that is sentient, can talk, and possesses a variety of telescoping robotic attachments. His signature catchphrase was "Rickety Rocket, blast off!".
The show followed a "Scooby-Doo type crime solving" format, where the team would investigate mysteries and unmask criminals disguised as monsters or aliens. Episodes often involved confronting space pirates, stopping space vampires like Count Draculon, or dealing with robotic headless horsemen. The agency typically received their assignments via video phone.
