The New Archies

Description:  The New Archies is an American animated television series that aired on NBC in 1987, which reimagined the classic Archie comic book characters as pre-teens in junior high school. The show follows the everyday misadventures, gags, and friendships of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, Reggie Mantle, and their new friends in Riverdale Junior High.

Premise: Unlike the original comics and previous animated series which featured the characters as high schoolers, this series focused on the gang during their middle-school years, exploring relatable pre-teen experiences with a 1980s twist.

Format: The show was a sitcom produced by DIC Animation City and ran for one season with 13 episodes. Each episode typically contained multiple segments (e.g., a 15-minute and a 30-minute segment) and often included musical interludes, although without the famous "Sugar, Sugar" style pop band element of the 1968 The Archie Show.

Characters: The main cast remained the same, but new characters were introduced, including an African-American boy named Eugene and his girlfriend Amani. Eugene effectively replaced Dilton Doiley as the intellectual character, and Veronica's accent changed from Southern (in earlier versions) to an archetypal "valley girl" dialect. Archie also had a dog named Red in this iteration.
