Description:  The All New Popeye Hour (1978-1981) was an hour-long animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions that aimed to bring the character of Popeye back to his roots in the original Thimble Theatre comic strip. The show focused on the classic adventures of Popeye the Sailor Man and his friends, while adhering to contemporary content restrictions on violence in children's television.

Premise: The series centered around Popeye, a gruff but good-hearted sailor with bulging forearms and an ever-present pipe, and his long-time girlfriend, Olive Oyl. Their lives were often complicated by the schemes of Popeye's nemesis, the burly bully Bluto, who was a constant rival for Olive's affections. To overcome Bluto's superior strength and trickery, Popeye would famously eat a can of spinach, granting him superhuman strength to save the day.

Key Features

Comic Strip Accuracy: The show restored Popeye's original black sailor uniform (instead of the white Navy uniform from earlier theatrical shorts) and changed the main villain's name back to Bluto (from "Brutus").

Reduced Violence: Due to Saturday morning cartoon guidelines, physical fights were minimized. Popeye typically used his spinach-powered strength to outwit Bluto or toss him away, rather than punching him.

Prosocial Messages: The show included short "Popeye's Safety Tips" segments, where Popeye taught his nephews about safety and avoiding the bad influence of Mr. No-No, an anthropomorphic wolf.
