Archie's TV Funnies
Description:
Archie's TV Funnies was a Saturday morning cartoon series in which Archie and his friends ran a local television station and showcased short animated adaptations of several classic newspaper comic strips.
The show, produced by Filmation, premiered on CBS on September 11, 1971. The central premise moved away from the musical and comedic segments of previous Archie cartoons like The Archie Show and Archie's Funhouse.
Program Format
Each episode typically featured one of the Riverdale gang reporting on a story as a framing device. Then, several short animated segments based on different classic comic strips were presented as "programming" on their TV station.
The classic comic strips featured in the series included: Broom-Hilda, The Captain and the Kids (based on The Katzenjammer Kids), Dick Tracy, The Dropouts, Emmy Lou, Moon Mullins, Nancy (and Sluggo), and Smokey Stover.
The episode would conclude with the entire gang appearing at the end of the main story.
